Mountains and Sea end of Season Run 2023

On Saturday 23rd September was our end of season run, which was named the mountains and sea run. Well, the name didn’t disappoint, however Kenny could have called it mountains, sea and sun run! Geoffrey and I left home in an Austin 7 with no kids and headed for Ballynahinch, meeting Kenny and Lynne along the way. We met up with the other 14 cars and with that we were off on our adventure. The route took us along some spectacular narrow, twisty, uphill, and downhill roads which lead to Spelga Dam. Here we stopped off for our picnic. After a short break we headed off again taking in more spectacular views of the Mourne mountains and then when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Kenny had found a picturesque bridge of what could only be described as CLASS!! The Pre-war cars looked well on top of the bridge. On the road again we were then taken to St John’s Point, down some single track roads which took us to a dead end where we met with the sea and a lighthouse!! Oh my, the day just kept getting better. Our final port of call was to Doc’s in Ardglass for delicious Fish and Chips, and not to forget the mushy peas.

It was only when we got home and reflected on the day that we realised that we had drove 145 miles in a Pre-war open top car and enjoyed every moment of it. I think the cobwebs were well and truly gone in both the car and us!! As I said at the start the name of the run did not disappoint. We had great scenery, great craic and great food. So a big ‘thank you’ to Kenny and Lynne for planning and leading us on a fantastic day out!!
